Mara

  Dolichotis patagonum

These are found in Central and Southern Argentina in pampas grassland.

Sometimes known as the Patagonian Hare this unusually large and long legged rodent resembles
a small deer. Their behaviour varies from rodent like tendencies when raising young, to that of hoofed
animals in adulthood.

Male-female pairs graze on grass and low shrubs and may be
found in groups when raising young. Unusually for rodents males
and females are known to pair for life.

Rhea

Rhea americana

The Greater Rhea is the largest South American bird. its powerful legs
compensate for its inablity to fly and can carry it at speed across the pampas.
It is of the same order as ostrich, emu and surprisingly the kiwi.

It is found from northen Brazil to central Argentina.

The male Rhea will mate with several hens who share a communal nest.
The cock incubates the eggs for up to 40 days and looks after the chicks for 6 months.

The Rhea is hunted for its feathers and eggs though the main threat is from cattle
and sheep ranchers fencing off their grassland habitat.
