Capuchin Monkeys

      Capuchin are due to arrive from Twycross zoo in early 2009

    sometimes known as 'organ grinder' Monkeys, they were frequently kept as exotic pets;
        Marcel, Ross's pet monkey in the series 'Friends', was a Capuchin.

      They get their name from the pale colouration around their head and neck. This resembles
a cowl (hood or hooded robe) worn by an order of catholic friars known as the Franciscan Capuchin.

                  Capuchins are considered the most intelligent of the new world monkeys and are able to adapt to new
environments with relative ease. They are very sociable and can form groups of up to 40 members. Fiercely territorial they have
     been filmed attacking and chasing snakes away from their group.

                   They are omnivorous, eating fruits, seeds, nuts, flowers, small vertebrates, insects and spiders. They are also
known to catch shellfish and crabs, smashing them against rocks to reach the flesh inside. Young Capuchins will watch the behaviour of
     of adults to learn new skills.
